タイトル A Comprehensive Study on Japanese Urban Beekeeping -Analyzing Biodiversity Considerations and Bee Species Selection
内容 This thesis examines urban beekeeping in Japan, focusing on the Kyoto Honeybee Garden
Promotion Project. It aims to understand the historical development, initiation, and
current status of Japanese urban beekeeping, particularly emphasizing biodiversity. The
methodology includes literature analysis, keyword searches, and interviews with Kyoto’s
urban beekeepers. The study delves into specific initiatives, challenges, and opportunities,
providing insights into the historical evolution of urban beekeeping. The Kyoto project
illustrates how it contributes to greening urban spaces and fostering coexistence with
nature. Nationally, the research explores the distribution, entities, hive locations, and bee
species in various Japanese honeybee projects. Temporal analysis shows fluctuations in
societal engagement with urban beekeeping. The absence of urban beekeeping
regulations in Japan poses a significant biodiversity challenge. This study advocates for
intentional planting, greenspace management, and projects prioritizing Japanese
honeybees. The thesis concludes by stressing the need for a holistic approach to urban
beekeeping, addressing biodiversity, fostering community involvement, and promoting
environmental stewardship for sustainability.
講評 In this sweeping study of beekeeping, Kanon uses an overview of the literature, a survey of Japanese beekeeping projects, and interviews to argue for the importance of caring for native Japanese honey bees. She shows that while they do not produce as much honey as their domesticated relatives (Western honey bees), wild Japanese honey bees are a sentinel species that only survive in ecologically sound conditions, requiring that we create a healthy environment. In this age of environmental uncertainty, their presence is much needed. Encouraged by Kanon’s enthusiasm for Japanese honey bees, we will soon be keeping them at our garden!
