Changing the Mindset of University Students Through Direct Experiential Learning of Food Environment Education
―A Case Study of the ARI Study Camp― |
内容 |
The serious challenges of our time, such as environmental problems and nature deficiency diseases, threaten to have a serious impact on our future. Environmental education is essential to address these challenges. While current environmental education focuses primarily on preschool and elementary/junior high school students, environmental education for college students is equally important. However, environmental education for university students is not yet well developed and needs to be expanded. According to previous studies, "direct experience materials" and "enriched learning linked to daily life practices" are reported to be effective in environmental education for university students. Therefore, from the viewpoint that "the most basic relationship with nature is through food," we considered that food environmental education would be effective. In this paper, we use the ARI Study Camp as a case study and conducted a questionnaire and interviews with the students who participated in ARI Study Camp. The questionnaire revealed that the ARI Study Camp improved the students' awareness of the food environment. In addition to the specific changes in the awareness of the students, the interviews also revealed that they underwent a transformation that led them to "reconsider their lifestyles" toward the realization of a sustainable society, which is the goal of food environmental education. Finally, I considered that issues and solutions to make the ARI Study Camp a more effective learning experience. |

Although it is widely recognized that learning about nature is best learned in nature, the most effective approach to nature-based learning is debatable. In this well written thesis, Mahiro uses observations and interviews in a case study of the ARI Study Camp to argue that the combined approach of food awareness and environmental education (ie. farm-based learning) results in young people rethinking life choices. At the same time, she suggests that to be most effective and produce actual changes in behavior, learning programs such as the ARI Study Camp need to be experienced on a regular basis. My hope is that Kyoto will one day have a place for young people to do just that. |
