It is difficult to eliminate discrimination against minorities, including sexual minorities, from Japanese society immediately. However, the society could have awareness and achieve knowledge about those marginalized groups of people to become more accepting. This research discusses how Japanese university students’ awareness of sexual minorities is affected by their education and interactions in junior and senior high school. From organizing and understanding basic terms about sexual minorities, analyzing textbooks, and considering the symbolic interactionism theory using interview data, it could be clarified that Japanese university students’ awareness is more likely to be affected by direct interactions with sexual minorities than by receiving an education about them. Misunderstandings and statements made without having knowledge could traumatize particular groups of people, including sexual minorities, and it could also lead to discrimination. To avoid those issues, society should be responsible to have the basic knowledge about the marginalized groups. |
