In China, parents spend a lot of money and time for their children’s studies because of the fierce competition due to the immense population and one-child policy. There are over 49 million families sending children abroad for studying every year at their own expense. Previous research has indicated that since the only child is the only one who could realize parents’ wishes, the sex of the children hardly influences parental aspirations. However, according to the previous research conducted about the gender differences of overseas students’ returnees’ employments situation in Shanghai, female returnees, who have studied abroad before, returned earlier than males. Based on these findings, I explore whether the parental educational aspirations are truly equal based on gender or not. I conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 Shanghainese overseas students’ mothers. From the analysis of this interview data, I found that the distrust of domestic education becomes the main factor of sending children abroad to study. In addition, the reasons why parents wish their children to get higher degrees differ according to gender. This thesis provides an understanding of the perspective of Shanghainese mothers towards children’s education under the one-child policy. |
