Society 5.0 was described in the 5th Science and Technology Basic Plan in 2016 as a future society that Japan should become. While Society 5.0 is expected to develop the economy and resolve social issues, there is also concern about technologies like artificial intelligence taking jobs from people. From the analysis of the occupational structure in Japan between 1985 to 2015, it is found that intelligent technologies take the place of manual labor, and the labor market is being polarized into high-skilled jobs and low-skilled jobs. By referring to several previous studies and analyzing official documents, this dissertation examines the effect of Society 5.0 on women’s workstyles. It is known that autonomy in the workplace contributes to time-flexibility, so this study puts forward autonomy as a key-concept for women achieving work-life balance. By considering the two concepts: polarization of employment and the separation of conception and execution, this paper concludes that skilled women have more opportunities to attain autonomy in their working time. On the other hand, another issue emerges as well; other women without high education have difficulty in balancing both work and family. This paper raises new questions about women's work styles and autonomy in Society 5.0. |
